### Morning Glory Clouds
Australia — A flawless, 1,000-kilometer-long rolling tube of cloud that sweeps across the Australian sky like a giant rolling pin.

During the dry season, competing sea breezes from the Coral Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria collide over the Cape York Peninsula. As the night air cools, cold air gets trapped beneath a layer of warm air—a process meteorologists call an inversion layer. The colliding sea breezes are forced to plunge underneath this lid of trapped air, creating a massive, rolling cylinder of wind known as an undular bore or a low-level atmospheric solitary wave.
As the air rolls upward at the front of the wave, moisture condenses into a visible cloud. As it sinks at the back, the cloud evaporates. This constant cycle of condensing and vanishing keeps the cloud in a crisp, perfectly tubular shape as it barrels forward at 10 to 20 meters per second.
While the fluid dynamics of this massive wave are mathematically understood, meteorologists are still actively debating why it happens here so predictably. The incredibly specific topographical alignment needed to trigger these precise nonlinear wave interactions forms almost exclusively in the Gulf of Carpentaria, remaining a rare and unpredictable mystery everywhere else on Earth.
