### Yamal Gas Emission Craters
Russia — Immense, perfectly round craters are violently exploding out of the Siberian permafrost as underground methane pressure builds.

Discovered by helicopter pilots in 2014, these terrifying, perfectly cylindrical black holes are a brand-new geological phenomenon. The Yamal Peninsula—whose name translates to "End of the Land" in the local Nenets language—is covered in continuous permafrost up to 400 meters thick. Beneath that ice lies a massive reserve of trapped methane gas, generated by the biochemical decay of ancient vegetation.
As the Arctic climate warms, the permafrost begins to thaw. The trapped methane builds immense pressure, forcing the frozen earth to bulge upward into a giant ice hill called a "pingo." When the ground can't stretch any further, it violently explodes. A single blast can eject up to 220,000 cubic meters of frozen sediment, leaving behind a yawning crater.
Chemical analysis definitively rules out meteorites or weapons testing, but cryosphere scientists are still fiercely debating what triggers the exact blast. Is the pressure building from the bottom-up, fueled by deep thermogenic gas migrating through fault lines? Or is it a top-down reaction, caused by the rapid thawing of gas hydrates and microbial activity right at the surface? Either way, the frozen Earth is literally blowing its top.
