Instead, the cave's food web relies on a process called chemosynthesis. Specialized bacteria literally eat the toxic, rotting-egg-scented gases to create energy, forming a thick, slimy microbial mat on the walls.

This toxic slime is an all-you-can-eat buffet for 48 distinct species of pale, completely blind cave animals—including spiders, leeches, and water scorpions—33 of which exist nowhere else on Earth. But while scientists understand how they survive, they are still fiercely debating when they arrived.

Did these creepy-crawlies get locked inside 5.5 million years ago when the Mediterranean Sea dried out during the Miocene epoch? Each mound is a massive pile of dark, gravel-free topsoil resting on a bed of heavy glacial cobble. Ranging from one to seven feet tall and up to 40 feet across, they are so closely packed that the landscape looks like a sea of giant, grassy bubble wrap. Because they are strictly natural, geologists have spent over a century trying to figure out what built them.

Today, scientists debate three main hypotheses. The Seismic Theory suggests that massive earthquakes shook the unstable, waterlogged glacial soil, vibrating the dirt into neat clumps. The Glacial Melt Theory argues that retreating ice or wind deposited the sediment into organized piles.
