If you spot a glowing orb zipping through the night sky, you might assume it's a UFO. UFO enthusiasts certainly did, flocking to this freezing Norwegian valley for decades. But scientists from Project Hessdalen didn't look for little green aliens. Instead, they set up an Automatic Measurement Station with radar and optical cameras to track the truth. They proved these silent, hovering lights are 100 percent real, measurable physical phenomena: glowing pockets of ionized gas, or atmospheric plasma. They even clocked one orb darting across the sky at a jaw-dropping 30,000 kilometers per hour, blasting out 19 kilowatts of radiant power.
So, what is powering these plasma speedsters? That is the fierce, ongoing scientific debate. Some geologists suspect the entire valley acts as a giant "macro-scale geological battery." One side of the valley is packed with copper-rich rocks, the other side has zinc and iron, and a river carrying sulfuric acid from old mines flows right between them. This massive natural battery could be sparking localized plasma discharges in the air.
Other researchers think the sparks come from tectonic stress squeezing underground quartz to generate piezoelectricity. Still others suspect decaying radon gas is ionizing atmospheric dust into glowing "Coulomb crystals."
