Apollo uses manipulated data to manufacture a fake chip shortage, seeking exit liquidity for its semiconductor bets while ignoring hard power grid limits.

If you read Apollo Global Management's latest sales brochure—masquerading, as these things so often do, as objective financial analysis—you would believe the tech industry is about to hit a wall because there simply aren't enough GPUs to go around. It is a very compelling narrative, especially if you have just poured billions of dollars into semiconductor fabrication plants. There is just one tiny, thermodynamic problem with their pitch.

I spent a frustrating couple of hours yesterday groaning at the spreadsheet sleight-of-hand in this report, meticulously clicking through their citations to figure out why a massive alternative asset manager is suddenly screaming about a catastrophic silicon bottleneck. They are working incredibly hard to convince the market that artificial intelligence development is completely constrained by the physical supply of manufactured chips, warning that a failure to secure immediate infrastructure assets will leave investors entirely behind. When you pull the actual corporate filings and dig into their portfolio, the motive becomes glaringly obvious. Apollo just led a multi-billion-dollar investment into Intel's Fab 34 in Ireland. They have an overwhelming financial conflict of interest here. The firm needs institutional buyers to panic, buy into their overarching infrastructure narrative, and serve as exit liquidity for their massive semiconductor bets.

Before we even get to the physical reality of the power grid, we have to talk about the underlying data they are using to manufacture this panic. The document features pricing charts for H100 chips that are, to put it mildly, an absolute shitshow of data visualization (a choice that makes the underlying disgorgement of capital all the more egregious). If you look closely at the X-axis mapping the purported exponential price squeeze, the intervals are completely faked. A timeline gap of three months takes up the exact same horizontal space as a gap of eighteen months, meticulously squishing and stretching the data to create the visual illusion of a frantic, vertical spike in hardware costs that simply is not happening in the real market. As the engineers on Hacker News who caught this spreadsheet sleight-of-hand pointed out, a side-by-side visual comparison of Apollo's distorted non-linear x-axis chart versus a mathematically corrected, linear x-axis chart of H100 prices makes the manipulation entirely undeniable. Apollo is telling their clients that hardware costs are skyrocketing out of control and that securing fab capacity is the only way out.

That would be a lie.

Now, if you ask the hardware supply-chain folks, semiconductor fabrication is experiencing legitimate constraints. They have a completely valid point there. I am more than willing to concede that TSMC's 3nm fabrication capacity actually is booked through 2026. The backlog for cutting-edge silicon is real, and the foundries are operating at absolute maximum capacity to meet the voracious demands of tech monopolies. But Apollo takes this factual premise and wildly extrapolates it within the frictionless, abstract world of private equity spreadsheets, where the only variable that matters is capital allocation and buying more chips magically resolves the bottleneck. In the physical world, purchasing ten thousand GPUs does absolutely nothing for your computational throughput if you cannot plug them into the wall.

This brings us to the actual constraint on artificial intelligence scaling: the stubborn, heavily regulated, and fundamentally immutable reality of the municipal electrical grid. We have reached a point where tech giants like Microsoft currently have vast amounts of hardware inventory sitting entirely idle in warehouses. They own the silicon, they have the server racks, but they literally lack the municipal power capacity required to turn them on. You cannot financialize your way out of thermodynamics. A modern AI computing cluster requires an obscene amount of electricity to power the processors and cool the high-density facilities, often drawing tens of megawatts for a single data hall. The grid does not operate on the same hyper-growth timeline as a venture capital slide deck. Expanding regional power transmission capacity requires years of environmental impact reviews, complex community board approvals, and heavy physical construction of new substations.

When you drill down into the grid data, the sheer absurdity of Apollo's "compute shortage" narrative becomes impossible to ignore. In Northern Virginia, which serves as the undisputed data center capital of the world and the primary physical backbone of the modern internet, operators are now demanding the equivalent of several large nuclear power plants just to meet existing construction demands. The regional power grid is completely tapped out, and utility providers are actively turning away new infrastructure projects because they physically cannot generate the necessary megawatts.

But the most devastating irony here—and the one that perfectly encapsulates the hubris of the financial class—brings us right back to Apollo's brand-new multibillion-dollar semiconductor investment in Ireland. EirGrid, the state-owned electric power transmission operator in Ireland, has placed a de facto moratorium on new Dublin data center applications until 2028. So, to summarize the macroeconomic brilliance at play here: Apollo is manufacturing an artificial panic about a global chip shortage to justify their massive investment in an Irish fabrication plant, all while the local Irish power authority has explicitly forbidden the construction of the data centers required to actually run those chips. (I strongly suspect that particular geographic detail was purposefully omitted from the glossy brochures).

None of this is an accident. We are watching the financial class execute their standard playbook to socialize their losses. They manufacture artificial market frenzies, obscure the grounded physical realities of their investments behind layers of complex securitization jargon and aggressive PR, and offload heavy, illiquid infrastructure bags onto unsuspecting institutional buyers. They expect the public and retail-adjacent pension funds to simply absorb the downside when the unchecked vibes inevitably collide with hard municipal utility limits.

We do not have to accept a financial ecosystem where private equity firms are allowed to manufacture panics just to offload their heavy infrastructure bags onto the public. We can, and must, demand baseline transparency and rigorous auditing of these so-called market insights. Regulators have the tools to penalize blatantly deceptive marketing materials disguised as objective research, and institutional allocators have the responsibility to demand physical receipts before handing over billions in capital. Because when we surrender to their artificial FOMO, we are just volunteering to be their exit liquidity.
