The persistent anger of the internet is not a moral failing, but a profitable system architecture that flattens local intimacy into a global database.

In his recent newsletter, Derek Thompson parsed philosopher Agnes Callard's theory of the "uni-context," subsequently triggering a predictably polarized Hacker News debate over the sheer hostility of the modern internet. Callard's premise maps cleanly onto what sociologists and media theorists have long termed context collapse. The academic consensus paints this phenomenon as a structural tragedy. Historically, human beings intuitively code-switched across isolated physical environments, speaking entirely differently to our bartenders, our mothers, and our colleagues. Now, thrust onto massive algorithmic feeds, every casual utterance is broadcast to an undifferentiated mass, violently flattening our multifaceted identities into a single, highly legible plane.

Reading the discourse surrounding these essays, the overwhelming sentiment frames this resulting friction as a massive, collective moral failing. We are repeatedly told that the timeline has simply eroded our empathy. Why do we persistently approach the sheer psychological exhaustion of the social web as a defect of the human soul rather than a highly rational outcome of system architecture?

To understand the persistent anger of the internet, we have to map a sterile codebase error directly onto human intimacy. In foundational computer science, developers rely on the concept of lexical scope. When you write a function, you declare local variables that exist strictly within the boundaries of those specific brackets. If you define a variable inside Function A, Function B cannot see it, modify it, or accidentally overwrite it. The logic is safely quarantined. Spatially, you can visualize this as a series of nested boxes, each containing its own isolated state data, impenetrable to the wider codebase.

Human intimacy natively demands this exact lexical scope. We are biological organisms deeply optimized for small, locally defined communication functions. A highly sarcastic, self-deprecating joke meant for your college group text relies on gigabytes of highly specific, shared historical state data. The execution environment is intricately tuned for that exact piece of code to compile successfully. This is why small group chats or gated communities like Discord feel so remarkably cozy to their users. They operate as locally scoped communication variables. The parameters are known. The state is safe.

Feels good.

If local scope is the optimal state for human connection, economic theory would suggest the market relentlessly optimize for it. In 2011, a tech giant attempted exactly that. The spectacular, multi-billion-dollar demise of Google+ Circles remains one of the purest post-mortems in consumer software. Google's product managers fundamentally understood the anxiety of context collapse, so they built a user interface that allowed individuals to manually quarantine their connections into distinct, lexically scoped buckets: Family, Coworkers, Acquaintances. It was conceptually flawless. It was also utterly doomed.

The cognitive friction of acting as a manual database administrator for your own social life proved instantly fatal for homo socialis. You can effortlessly compel a human to scroll a frictionless feed for three hours, but you cannot compel them to drag-and-drop their mother into a dedicated sociological partition.

Because manual sorting failed, and because algorithmic feeds require immense liquidity to survive, we entered an era defined by what I call Contextual Scope Depreciation.

Modern digital platforms simply do not tolerate local variables. Maintaining isolated, context-rich runtimes for human interaction requires massive compute and yields terribly fragmented ad-targeting data. Legibility is the currency of the realm. A flattened, globally scoped user identity is exponentially cheaper to parse and infinitely more monetizable for machine learning ad-tech than a nuanced, highly contextual one. By forcing every user, corporate brand, and anonymous shitposter to execute in the exact same global runtime environment, platforms eliminate the massive CapEx of context.

Every time you open TikTok or X, you step into a uni-context where the protective walls between your functions have been bulldozed. Because these ecosystems are governed by velocity algorithms, they treat human sentiment as a purely fungible commodity. In physical reality, a joke told at a funeral and the exact same joke told in a loud dive bar carry entirely different emotional payloads. The physical architecture provides the context. In the digital feed, the architecture is invisible, uniform, and brutally flat. The system demands total liquidity. Local context is inherently illiquid.

That's the entire structural compromise.

Let us view the ensuing daily chaos through this sterile, mechanical lens. Imagine a teenager posts a deeply ironic, hyper-specific S-tier banger. It is crafted precisely for a localized graph of mutuals who share identical linguistic priors and pop-culture obsessions. Suddenly, the platform's recommendation algorithm, blindly seeking engagement arbitrage, scoops up this fragile piece of code and serves it to a hostile, sixty-year-old political operative halfway across the country.

The operative's brain automatically attempts to parse the joke using a completely foreign namespace. The cultural variables do not align. The underlying logic fails to compile. It throws a catastrophic runtime error.

In our extremely online vernacular, we call this a viral dunk. We call it cancellation, quote-tweet toxicity, or the death of nuance. We write endless think-pieces about the polarization of the electorate and the decay of societal trust. But in systems theory, it is merely a predictable, mathematical state change caused by an intentional namespace collision. The algorithm is operating exactly as designed, extracting a highly profitable arbitrage opportunity from our mutual misunderstanding.

And so we scroll, repeatedly exposing our local variables to global environments, confused as to why the ensuing interactions leave us feeling completely drained. We expect software to magically bridge the empathy gap, forgetting that software is ultimately just plumbing optimized for data flow, completely indifferent to the psychological cost of the transfer.

Perhaps this inescapable baseline level of societal friction persists entirely because we naturally choose the frictionless ease of a unified feed over the tedious labor of defining our boundaries. We are locally scoped monkeys trying to survive in a globally scoped database. The system executed its globalizing logic flawlessly to maximize liquidity, scaling the interaction until our social processors simply ran out of memory.
