Austria — A bizarre chimney effect pulls freezing winter winds inside a mountain, creating the world's largest dynamic ice cave.

Eisriesenwelt (which translates to "World of the Ice Giants") was initially carved out of a massive limestone karst plateau by the Salzach river during the Pleistocene epoch. Today, it is the world's largest dynamic ice cave, and it exists because the mountain acts like a giant, freezing vacuum cleaner. The cavern has openings at different altitudes, creating a meteorological phenomenon known as a "chimney effect" that yanks massive drafts of air through the 42-kilometer-long system.
During winter, bone-chilling mountain winds get sucked inside, supercooling the limestone rock walls well below the freezing point. When spring arrives, warmer snowmelt from the mountaintop seeps down through cracks in the rock. The second that liquid water touches the supercooled cave walls, it freezes instantly, building up 33,000 cubic meters of towering blue ice pillars and motionless frozen waterfalls.
You might think a warming planet would easily melt the Ice Giants, but scientists studying the cave with Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Ground Penetrating Radar have uncovered a surprisingly balanced thermal mystery. The cave actually loses its ice mass during the coldest months through sublimation—a process where dry winter winds turn solid ice directly into water vapor—only to be repopulated by fresh spring meltwater. Geologists are heavily monitoring the cave to see if rising surface temperatures will eventually shatter this delicate cycle.
