Deep in the Mexican jungle, a network of thermal springs pumps massive amounts of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas into Cueva de Villa Luz. This is the exact same gas that gives rotten eggs their terrible smell. In most places on Earth, this gas is lethal. But here, extreme, sulfur-loving bacteria treat it like an all-you-can-eat buffet.

These extremophile microbes consume the gas, oxidize it, and excrete sulfuric acid as a waste product. Billions of them clump together on the ceiling to form gelatinous, mucus-like colonies that scientists officially named "snottites." These dripping snot-stalactites sweat liquid with a pH between 0 and 3.5—making them as violently corrosive as car battery acid. The acid physically burns away the limestone walls, rapidly enlarging the cavern and turning hard rock into soft gypsum paste. This extreme rock-melting process is called sulfuric-acid speleogenesis.

Despite the deadly air and a stream running opaque white with suspended sulfur, the cavern bursts with life. The massive bacterial buffet feeds an entire food web, including huge populations of "blind sardines." Today, geologists still fiercely debate a major mystery: is the cave primarily being hollowed out by background chemical reactions in the air and water, or by the direct, biological acid-sweat of the extremophile snottites?
