### The Boiling River (Shanay-Timpishka)
Peru — Tucked deep in the Amazon is a crystal-clear, bubbling river hot enough to instantly cook anything that falls in.

Thermal rivers are supposed to exist right next to active volcanoes, not in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. For years, Western academics dismissed the Boiling River—locally known as Shanay-Timpishka—as a ridiculous jungle myth. It wasn't until 2011 that geoscientist Andrés Ruzo hiked into the Peruvian rainforest and scientifically proved it was real. The most shocking part? The nearest volcano is over 700 kilometers away.
So, what heats a jungle river to a blistering 99.1°C (210.4°F)? A process driven by the Earth's natural geothermal gradient. Rainwater falls high in the distant Andes mountains and percolates deep down into the Earth's crust, where it is superheated by the mantle. A massive tectonic fault zone then acts like a high-pressure plumbing system, shooting this boiling groundwater back up to the surface and injecting it directly into the riverbed springs.
Some locals originally feared the heat was caused by an illegal oil drilling accident. However, isotopic and geochemical testing proved the water is entirely natural—and actually contains fewer dissolved minerals than commercial bottled water. It flows as a continuous 6.3-kilometer stretch of bubbling, lethal rapids, a geological marvel hiding in plain sight.
