### Dallol Hydrothermal System

Located at the Afar Triple Junction where three tectonic plates are violently pulling apart, magma bubbles just a few kilometers below the surface. This underground furnace heats groundwater, which shoots up through an ancient, buried marine salt deposit. When this boiling brine hits the air, it creates an alien world of crusty salt flats and mineral pillars in violent, rusting shades of neon green, bright yellow, and orange. Unlike many other colorful places on Earth, these vibrant hues aren't made by living extremophiles acting as microscopic sunscreen. They are the result of pure chemistry, as heavy metals, iron oxides, and sulfur rapidly oxidize in the open air.
Dallol is a "polyextreme" environment: its springs are ten times saltier than the ocean, reach temperatures of 109°C (228°F), and are intensely acidic. It's so hostile that scientists are locked in a fierce astrobiology debate over whether anything can survive there. In 2019, one research team claimed to have discovered ultra-small archaea living in the liquid. Months later, a rival team completely refuted them, arguing the pools are 100% sterile and the supposed "cells" were actually abiotic biomorphs—microscopic mineral balls that just happen to look exactly like bacteria. The mystery remains open: just because a planet has liquid water doesn't mean life can survive it.
