Expressing Location with 在

Subject + 在 + Place (+ Position Word)

To state where someone or something is located, use the verb 在 (to be at/in/on) followed by a place. Often, a position word like 上 (on) or 里 (in) is added after the place to be more specific.

教授在军舰上。The professor is on the warship.

怪物在水里。The monster is in the water.

Change of State with 了

Subject + Adjective / Verb + 了

Placing the particle 了 at the end of a sentence can indicate that a new situation has emerged or a change of state has occurred.

军舰坏了。The warship is broken (it became broken).

军舰走了。The warship is gone (it has left).
